Willie Nelson and Lucinda Williams - Over Time
from It Will Always Be (2004)
Lucinda originally recorded this song for World Without Tears; to be honest, I love this version more for the vulnerability of her vocal than for Willie’s duet, though his warm, round baritone is a wonderful counterpoint to her breathy whisper.
Willie knows a good song when he hears it, though, and this is a great one. The best country songs work like the best jokes — they isolate a common piece of experience and explore it, uncovering truths that are common to all of us but which we rarely examine. In “Over Time”, Lucinda writes about that yawning gap that opens up at the end of a relationship, when you know that you’ll forget in time, but can’t imagine how that could ever happen. Because the memories keep floating back, unbidden — “Your pale skin. Your sexy crooked teeth.” It seems all too impossible that they could ever slip away — until one day, they have.
